Providence's Travis Picked by Reds

Senior third baseman goes in 40th round of major league draft, now will have a decision to make.

Now, it's that something.

Sam Travis has new piece of information to rattle around in the back of his brain.

Travis, the Providence Catholic High School senior third baseman and resident of Orland Park, was selected in the 40th round of the major league draft by the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday. In time, he'll have to decide whether to sign with the Reds or play college ball.

He is committed to Indiana.

"This is a great honor for Sam (Travis)," Providence coach Mark Smith said. "I am extremely proud of him. I want him to do what he and his family think is best for him. I do believe if he goes to college that he will only improve his draft stock for the future."

Travis will be looking to end his high school career on a high note in the Class 4A state tournament Friday at Saturday at Silver Cross Field in Joliet. He is the top hitter on a Providence team that carries a 36-3 record into a 3 p.m. semifinal game on Friday vs. Prospect (26-8).

The Celtics are looking to win their first IHSA state baseball title since they won the Class A crown in 1982.

Travis, a 6-foot, 195-pound slugger, is hitting .504 with 15 home runs and 72 RBIs. He also has three triples and 16 doubles.
