Truck Crashes Into Manhattan Building, Residents Evacuated

A pickup truck crashed into a Manhattan building near Times Square, evacuating residents and sending the driver to the hospital.

MANHATTAN, IL - Residents of a downtown Manhattan building were evacuated Thursday night after a pickup truck crashed into the building. Police and fire units responded to the intersection of S. State St. and E. North St. around 5:30 p.m., when they found the pickup truck crashed into the two-story apartment building at 110 W. North St.

The driver of the pickup truck was injured and hospitalized while residents were temporarily evacuated "as a precaution" while village officials "continue to investigate the accident and assess the damage to the building," according to police.

Traffic was closed in the westbound lane of North Street in the area near the Times Square Shopping Center until the building was determined to be safe.

Manhattan Police Chief Joseph Wazny said traffic was opened at the intersection during the overnight hours, when residents were also allowed back in the building.
