Sales Tax Up To 9 Percent In New Lenox

Village trustees approved raising the sales tax in New Lenox to help pay for water and sanitary improvements.

NEW LENOX, IL -- Officials in New Lenox voted unanimously to increase the sales tax in the village and make it among the highest in Will County. The vote from trustees came after a motion to forego a second reading on the measure at the final board meeting in August, according to a Daily Southtown report.

The new sales tax - 9 percent - is an increase from the 8.5 percent that’s been on the books since 2011 and will go into effect at the beginning of 2018.

The new tax rate puts New Lenox well above its neighbors like Frankfort (7 percent), Mokena (7.5 percent) and Joliet (8.75 percent).

Officials said the increase, thought to generate almost $2 million in additional income every year, was enacted to help the village pay for improvements to its water and sanitary treatment systems.

The improvements will cost about $80 million and include the installation of a second water line. New Lenox has reported several water main breaks in recent months due to its current declining system.
