Trucker Killed After Semi Dangles Near New Lenox Overpass

One person died and another was injured, New Lenox Fire officials confirmed.

NEW LENOX, IL - A semitrailer carrying steel coils lost control along the southbound Interstate 355 feeder ramp into I-80. The truck went airborne and came to rest upside down along the embankment shortly before 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in New Lenox Township. The New Lenox Fire Protection District responded to the scene as well as Illinois State Police. One person died and another person was injured. At 10:45 p.m., the Will County Coroner's Office identified the fatality victim as truck driver, Serghei Balint, a 33-year-old resident of Wheeling, IL. The coroner's office stated that he was pronounced deceased at 4:54 p.m.

Earlier, at 7 p.m., New Lenox firefighters issued a press release.

"This afternoon at 3:23 p.m. the New Lenox Fire Protection District received a call for service for an accident with injuries on the southbound I-355 ramp to eastbound I-80. Upon arrival, the semi appeared to have crashed into the bridge and rolled down an embankment. There was one fatality and one person was injured and taken to a local hospital. Currently the ramp has been shut down for reconstruction and is being investigated by the Illinois State Police," New Lenox fire officials announced.
