Silver Cross Hospital Employees Awarded Scholarships

The Silver Cross Foundation recently awarded $18,000 in scholarships to 10 hospital employees and three children of Silver Cross employees.

“Silver Cross is pleased to provide assistance to our motivated employees and their children for continuing education,” says Paul Pawlak, President/CEO of Silver Cross Hospital.

Doris Hubbs, R.N. Nursing Alumnae Scholarship

The scholarship is awarded annually to a Silver Cross employee accepted to or currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate registered nursing program or nursing certificate program. Plainfield resident Ivona Oruc is the recipient of a $1,000 Doris Hubbs, R.N. Nursing Alumnae Scholarship. Oruc is pursuing a degree at Chamberlain College of Nursing. She is a certified nurse assistant on Silver Cross Hospital’s 4:3 Patient Care Unit.

Frances M. Thomas Nursing Scholarships

The scholarship is named for former Silver Cross Emergency Department Registered Nurse Frances Thomas and is awarded to a nursing employee assist with tuition and expenses. Mokena resident Kylee Bandyk, certified nurse assistant on the Silver Cross Hospital’s 4:3 Patient Care Unit who pursuing a degree at Joliet Junior College, and Morris resident Robyn Wills, obstetrics technician on Silver Cross Hospital’s Women and Infant Services Unit, each received a $500 scholarship.

Keyton H. Nixon Scholarship

This scholarship, named after former Silver Cross President Keyton Nixon, is awarded annually to a Silver Cross employee who is pursuing graduate studies in healthcare. The 2014 recipient of the $1,000 Keyton H. Nixon Scholarship is Manhattan resident Kathryn Becker. Becker, a registered nurse in the Silver Cross Intensive Care Unit, is pursuing a degree at University of St. Francis.

Donna and Jim Galligan Scholarship

This scholarship is funded by Donna and Jim Galligan, longtime Joliet residents and devoted supporters of Silver Cross Hospital. New Lenox resident Ryan Futterer, a Certified Nurse Assistant on the Intensive Care Unit who is pursuing a degree at Kankakee Community College, and Manhattan resident Abeni Salcedo, certified nurse assistant on the Hospital’s 4:4 Patient Care Unit who is pursuing a degree at Everest College, each received a $1000 scholarship.

Twilla S. Margaron Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship is named after Twilla S. Margaron, who was a 1950 graduate of the Silver Cross School of Nursing and an active member of the Silver Cross Advisory Board, which operates the Silver Cross Encore Resale Shop. This scholarship is awarded annually to a Silver Cross employee who is pursuing graduate studies in nursing. Plainfield resident Ludyvina Acosta, a registered nurse on Silver Cross Hospital’s Women and Infant Services Unit, is the recipient of a $1,000 Twilla S. Margaron Nursing Scholarship. Acosta is pursuing a degree at Joliet Junior College.

Dr. Irving Rudman Scholarship

This scholarship, named after beloved former Silver Cross physician Dr. Irving Rudman, is awarded annually to a Silver Cross employee who is pursuing graduate studies in healthcare. Joliet resident Sabrina Spencer, registered nurse on the Silver Cross Intensive Care Unit, is the recipient of a $2,000 Dr. Irving Rudman Scholarship. She is pursuing a degree at Purdue University - Calumet.

Physician’s Legacy Scholarship

The Physician Legacy Scholarship, which is sponsored by the Silver Cross Medical Staff, acknowledge physicians’ legacy of service and commitment to Silver Cross Hospital and is given annually to Silver Cross employees pursuing a healthcare degree. Tinley Park resident Miesha Landers, certified nurse assistant on the Hospital’s Pediatric Unit who attending St. Xavier University, and Plainfield resident Megan Overcash, registered nurse in Silver Cross Intensive Care Unit who is attending University of St. Francis, each received a $2,000 Physician’s Legacy Scholarship. In addition, three children of Silver Cross Hospital employees also received $,2000 Physicians Legacy Scholarships. They are Lockport resident Jessica Barnes, who is pursuing a Biomedical Sciences degree at Grand Valley State University, Homewood resident Emily Drwiega, who is pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree at Butler University, and New Lenox resident Sarah McDonald, who is pursuing an Occupational Therapy degree at St. Louis University.
