Sin: the Black Mold of Our Lives

Devotion about getting rid of what is sinful in our lives.

If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell, where their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched. ~ Mark 9:43-48

We have had an unusual amount of rain this summer. Water seems to get into cracks and crevices we never knew existed. Leaks seem to appear out of nowhere, and with these leaks we sometimes find an even worse problem – black mold!

Sin is very much like black mold in our spiritual life. When we get lax in our faith, sin seems to find a way into our life, creating a very unhealthy spirit within us. We can try to “cover it up” or “wipe it away”, but it will continue to return until we find the source of this sin in our lives and “cut it out”. This does not necessarily mean that we need to cut off whatever part of our body is performing the sin, but find what is triggering the sin in the first place and omit it from our lives. Then, and only then, can we truly be cleansed in our spiritual life to be presentable to God.

Heavenly Father,

We know we are not perfect, and yes, we even sometimes get lazy in our spiritual lives. Please help us to find whatever is displeasing to You in our lives and help us to rid ourselves of it so that we are once again presentable to You for use as you will have us do to further Your kingdom here on this earth. Amen.
