6Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon.
7A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, ‘Give me a drink.’
13Jesus said to her, ‘Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.’ ~ John 4:6-7 and 13-14

Today is one of our hottest days so far this summer. The heat index is well over 100° F. To try to stay hydrated in this heat seems almost impossible if you have to be out in it for any length of time. Going in and out of the air-conditioning also taxes the body - making you feel tired and like a good, long nap is in order!
Jesus didn’t have the luxury of an air-conditioned vehicle to travel in. He walked everywhere. As He traveled, He tired and became thirsty just like everyone else, although we often find it difficult to believe. Jesus was fully human and fully divine all at the same time. When He asked the Samaritan woman for a drink, anyone of the Jewish faith would have been shocked to see Jesus even talking to this woman, since in the Jewish culture associating with a Samaritan was like associating with a dog – considered to be well beneath their stature in life. Jesus also offered her “spiritual water” – that will become like a spring welling up inside her so that she would never thirst again and will give her eternal life. This “spiritual water” is for all who will listen and accept it from Him – not just the Jewish people to which He came as their long awaited Messiah. Jesus came for everyone to have their spiritual thirst quenched. Draw near to Him today, open up your heart and your mind to Him and allow His spiritual water to fill you through prayer and studying His Word, then rest in the assurance that His eternal peace awaits us at the end of our journey here on earth.

Dearest Lord Jesus,
Thank You for Your life-giving, spiritual water that You offer to all who will accept it. Fill us and quench our thirst for You and help us to rest in the assurance of Your eternal peace. Amen.
