Trinity Services, Inc. celebrates opening of newest sensory garden

Trinity Services hosts open house to celebrate opening of sensory garden for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities

Trinity Services, Inc. recently celebrated the opening of its newest sensory garden, designed to provide a place of relaxation, learning and enjoyment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

About 70 guests attended a celebration on Sept. 28 at John’s Garden, located behind one of Trinity’s residences in Joliet. The garden was built in memory of John DeJean, who lived at the home for many years. The garden was envisioned by John’s sister, Carolyn Christensen, and made a reality thanks to the generous support of many including the Rogers Family Foundation and Reyes Holdings.

The garden has sensory boxes filled with plants that stimulate sight, touch, taste and smell, an Aeolian harp that plays with the wind, a waterfall, walking paths that are wide enough to easily navigate wheelchairs, and benches to restfully enjoy the beautiful foliage.

The garden will be utilized by people served by Trinity Services, a New Lenox-based non-profit organization that serves 3,500 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health needs.
