UPDATE: Body Found in Lake Michigan Was Drowned New Lenox Man

Friends of the Brett Van Etten, 20, said he was lost in the waves Wednesday at Wells Street Beach in Gary, Ind.

The body of the 20-year-old New Lenox resident presumed drowned was found under water in Lake Michigan early Thursday afternoon.

Brett Van Etten was separated in the water from friends on Wednesday, and search crews uncovered the body after nearly 24 hours.

Gene Davis, conservation officer with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, said family members are on the site and will identify the body soon, but it is believed to be Vanetten.

The body was caught under 7 feet of water about a quarter of a mile west of where he was last seen, off the shore of Wells Street Beach in Gary, Ind. A search crew located the body using side-scan sonar and then sent divers in to retrieve the body, which was about 150 yards off shore.
