Whose Cookies Will Make Santa Smile? Comment for a Shot at a $50 Gift Card

This week, local editors Joe Vince (Frankfort), Michael Sewall (New Lenox) and Paul Dailing (Mokena) tried cookies at restaurants and stores in their respective Patch towns.

Charleyhorse, New Lenox (5 of 5 stars)

The good: Leave this cookie for Santa and he'll give you tons of great presents. Baked in a skillet dish, this $7 Cookie Monster is gooey on the inside and crispy around the edges. For $2 more, I got it topped with three scoops of vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, caramel, whipped cream and sprinkles.

The bad: Leave this cookie for Santa and he'll end up outside your house in July saying, "C'mon man, just one more bite. You know I'm good for it in six months." The cookie was a bit doughy in the center, but mixed in with the ice cream it's OK. It also takes 20 minutes to make, so order ahead!

Fleckenstein's Bakery, Mokena (5 of 5 stars)

The good: "Oh, my God," I said out loud when I bit into the first holiday decco butter cookie. It's that good. Buttery, delicious and amazing. This is the platonic form of butter cookies. I also got myself one of the snowman-shaped cookies. Also great, but not so much a platonic form as an aristotelian mean. (Part of my Christmas present to myself is including a couple jokes for my nerd brethren.)

The bad: The rankings only go up to five stars.

Sugarless World Bakery, Mokena (4.5 of 5 stars)

The good: Santa's getting a little chunky lately, so he should have a sugarless option so he can still shimmy down all those chimneys. The chocolate chip cookies from Mokena's only sugar-free bakery is a really tasty choice. And that's tasty tasty, not "tasty considering it's sugar-free." This is a Santa-worthy cookie.

The bad: A bit small for chocolate chip, but all that means is that I really could have used more of this tastiness.

Kernel Sweetooth, Frankfort (5 of 5 stars)

The good: The sweet shop serves a variety of holiday cookies, and I sampled five of them (the lengths editors go for Patch readers). These are crisp, sugar cookies that aren't too hard so it feels like your going to break your teeth. The thing I liked the best was how the cookies and the frosting weren't too sweet and starchy that they left an aftertaste. I can't speak for Santa, but I wouldn't be disappointed if these were left out for me.

The bad: I had no complaints.
