Chef Klaus' Bier Stube, Frankfort (4 of 5 stars)

The good: It shouldn't be much of a surprise that Frankfort's premiere German restaurant would serve a tasty bratwurst sandwich, full of flavor and not greasy. Chef Klaus' does the traditional brat a little differently, eschewing the standard bun for toasted German rye bread and cutting the brat in half as well as down the middle. I heartily endorse both changes. It's the perfect dish to have .

The bad: The sandwich is a bit on the small side, and although I'm a fan of serving it plain, some people might enjoy their brats with some sauerkraut, onions or mustard on them.

Wynder's Spiral Cut Hot Dogs, New Lenox (4.5 of 5 stars)

The good: Wynder's recently debuted a new kind of meat for its brats, and it was great. The makes this the perfect mix of crispy on the outside but juicy on the inside. The sport peppers were hot without taking away from the brat's taste.

The bad: The onions didn't add much flavor. Besides that, I'm just left wanting more! The bratwurst isn't that large, but packs a lot of taste.

PJ's Restaurant, Mokena (5 of 5 stars)

The good: Instantly won me over with the one thing all brats should have – a mountain of sauerkraut. Good kraut, great brat and they asked whether you want brown or yellow mustard instead of just plopping on the yellow. .

The bad: Limited time only, people! The brats debuted last Monday and will only be around "for the next few weeks," owner Pauline Stevens said.
