10 Days in Jail for DUI Homicide that Killed Bicyclist on North Side
Drunk driver from Park Ridge pleaded guilty in 2013 Lincoln Park accident sentenced to brief jail term and four years probation

CHICAGO, IL - A Park Ridge man has been sentenced to 10 days in jail after pleading guilty to charges of reckless homicide and aggravated drunken driving over the death of a bicyclist in a 2013 Old Town accident. Prosecutors said Ryne San Hamel, 32, was driving nearly twice the 30 mph speed limit and had a blood-alcohol level of 0.15, nearly twice the maximum allowed by law, when he struck and killed 26-year-old bicyclist Bobby Cann.
Cann worked at Groupon and was prominent in Chicago's community of bikers, friends and relatives told DNAinfo. San Hamel was at the time a partner in a nightlife directory called "AllYouCanDrink.com" according to WGN. He had been out drinking after a Cubs win May 29, 2013 when his speeding Mercedes fatally hit Cann on the 1300 block of North Clybourn, prosecutors said. Despite the fact San Hamel had a green light and Cann was riding through a red light, prosecutors sought three to 14 years in prison for the drunk and speeding driver.
"I live with that moment every day, every minute, every time I lay down and try to sleep," San Hamel said at his sentencing hearing, according to DNAinfo. He told the court he had attempted to help save Cann's life after striking him, and he asked for forgiveness. The judge in the case, William J. Hooks, reportedly said he took into account San Hamel's expressions of remorse and did not believe he was a danger to society. In addition to 10 days in jail, San Hamel was handed four years of probation and required to pay about $25,000 in Cann's funeral expenses.
