One word could be used to describe the 2020 Oscars landscape: White.

Yes, this year, like many in the past, the Academy has once again proven that their struggle for inclusion is not over. Even with past year’s protests and policy/rule changes to help bring about more diversity, of the 20 acting nomination, there are two people of color: Antonio Banderas, who is Spanish, and Cynthia Erivo, who is British with Nigerian ancestry.

We also have a lack of female diversity in the directing, cinematography and other technical awards. Still? Will we ever get to a point where females and minorities will be as equally represented in the Oscar nominations as they are throughout the country’s population? But, then again, one could also say this about many areas. Congress. Wall Street. CEOs. But, somehow, it’s easier (and more fun) to pick on the Oscars.

Saying that, I do find this an interesting year for movies. The Academy selected nine Best Picture contenders and one place where the Oscars have remained diverse is with its varied array of nominated films. We have a film about auto racing in the 1960s; the epic story of the (possible) final days of Jimmy Hoffa; a WWII satire about a German family hiding a Jewish girl; the story of an alienated, psychopathic stand-up comic; a tale of four sisters in the mid-1800s Massachusetts; a story of a fractured marriage falling apart; a WWI tale of valor and bravery; a 1960s Hollywood story about a former TV star, a stuntman and a superstar couple destined for infamy; and finally a film about two very different families in South Korea. WOW.
