Fitting Fitness into Your Daily Routine....Making It Work

Fitting Fitness into Your Daily Routine....Making It Work

Fitness is NOT "fit for every BODY" In fact it takes hard work dedication and a reason to keep doing it again and again and again. Don’t let anyone tell you they LOVE working out. I am sure if those people had a choice they would rather be eating, sleeping or shopping instead of working out.

But the fact of the matter remains fitness is necessary for everyone….no matter age, fitness level, or physical ability. It keeps us healthy, reduces stress, and keeps us looking good. So that being said and done just how do you make it work?

First commit: write it down on your calendar, tell a friend, bring a friend and make yourself accountable. You don’t have to give a full hour of your time 5 days a week…crawl first. Crawling leads to walking, walking leads jogging; jogging leads to running and from there you are on your way… well maybe

There will always be cracks in the road making you stumble…bad day at work, sick child, car wont start, but you have to be creative, think outside the box and figure out how to put fitness into your day.

We asked around The Niles Family Fitness Center to find out how are members and guests “Fit Fitness” into their day: Here is a sample of the answers:

“Fitness has a large part in my life. During the weekdays I try to swim a few times a week. During the weekends fitness comes many different ways. I am an outdoors type of person so I like to take hikes, and now that the weather is getting warmer it is time to take my canoe out and start going for some paddles again”.  Kurt W Quitshaw Niles Family Fitness Center, Aquatics Coordinator

“This really goes back to why we work out?  Isn't it to be healthier in our daily functional lives?   I take the stairs whenever possible.  What are the gym machines preparing you for if not to be able to walk up and down the stairs with groceries or laundry? I take precautions when I pick up heavy items (or children) just like I would protect my back if I were using weights. I am very aware of my posture (sitting and standing).  Pilates has made me aware of that. Of course I try to remember to breathe during the day.  It sounds ridiculous but how many times during the day are we so busy that we literally forget to breathe just like when we exercise”  M.L. Chicag

“I have found to things I am passionate about and love doing…spinning and yoga. I do it regularly and never want to miss a class”   Linda Mathis Niles Family Fitness Center, Membership Services Coordinator

“I try to fit fitness in by doing many of the moves [my fitness trainer] has taught me. I do triceps dips using stairs, squats, lunges and planks. The difficult part is making it a routine; I try to do some in the AM before work and then some after work. I try to park far away in the parking lot and walk more.”  E.M.  Niles

”In addition to making time to exercise at the gym, I take lengthy walks outdoors with my dog, park farther from my destinations, and I take the stairs.

I also consider eating right fitting fitness into my day.  Sometimes it takes a bit more effort, but eating salads often and fruit and vegetables for snacks is a good way to stay fit on the inside.” Danielle Desherow, Group Fitness Coordinator Niles Family Fitness Center

“I walk to and from the EL Station then walk to work. I train twice a week at the Niles Family Fitness Center”

K.C.  Chicago

“There are 24 hours in a day. I try to get 8 hours of sleep. Work accounts for another 9 hours. That leaves me with 7 hours to FIT in a workout. I take one hour out of every day for exercise. I try working out at lunch time and eat at my desk after exercise. If lunch time does not work on that day I will set aside one hour after dinner before I go to bed. It improves my sleep each night and helps me wake up refreshed most days. The key is I make it a point and schedule it into my day. Carl Maniscalco, Director Niles Family Fitness Center

“I walk up the stairs at work and take my dog for a 2 mile walk everyday.”  I train twice a week at The Niles Family Fitness Center”

                                                M.W. Niles

I enjoy many different types of exercises.  I swim, take a pilates or boot camp class, work on the incline trainer and love using free weights.  I also go out on the bike trail and walk in my neighborhood with friends in the evening.  It’s great to mix things up and just a simple walk makes you feel refreshed! Cathy Fay, Niles Family Fitness Center Fitness Coordinator

“I do 45 minutes of cardio at Lunch. I train twice a day at The Niles Family Fitness Center

                                                M.P. Niles
