Corn is King at the Market!

The sweetest corn of all is in season at the market this week, along with all the best the season has to offer!

The big news these days is about the drought, but thanks to
irrigation systems at our local farms, we have the fruits and vegetables our
shoppers have come to enjoy. At the Welcome to Morton Grove Day last Saturday, fruits were at the height of their season, with raspberries, cherries and
peaches perfect for pies or just to eat fresh from the farm.  Children of all ages enjoyed learning about home grown organizations in Morton Grove and showed their silly side at the balloon man, R.C. Juggles.

Corn is the big news for the week; it is in season and everyone has been enjoying it grilled or boiled.  This coming Saturday the market will have Mirai corn, a super sweet version originally created in Japan and now being harvested at Twin Garden Farms in Illinois. We recommend coming early to make sure you get yours.

Along with corn and fruit  there is more produce coming into season; yellow and green zucchini, summer squash, red onions, garlic, beets, kale, red and romaine lettuce,  green beans, white and purple eggplants, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, kohlrabi, herbs and more. Along with the seasonal fruits and vegetables the market will have grass-fed beef, pork and free-range chicken and eggs, honey, jellies, jam, homemade pita chips, baked goods and lots more to taste. After all that food is in your basket, make sure you bring your knives and even pruning shears to Boston Sharpening Service. Fred will work while you enjoy the sound of Bee, at the music stage.

Worried about how the drought is affecting all our farmers, from corn to alpacas? Ask them what methods they are using to keep their crops growing and their animals healthy.  Our local farmers always enjoy talking with their customers and educating about eating locally.

The Morton Grove Farmers’ Market is open Saturdays 8am to 12pm at 6210 Dempster Street right next to Harrer Pool at Fernald.  Walk, bike or drive to the market and come visit us at the welcome booth to enter a drawing for a free basket full of market goodies! Keep updated on the market by liking us on Facebook or check our website at www.MGFarmersMarket.com.
