Coming Full Circle

Shirley Anthony began volunteering on the board of directors at Eastcastle Place for over 30 years, now she's happy to call it home.

She’s come full circle. Shirley Anthony began volunteering on the board of directors at Eastcastle Place senior living community on the vibrant Eastside of Milwaukee more than 30 years ago. “The board was very active volunteering at the community. We loved helping the talented staff,” she recalled, adding that there were committees of the board members helping out in finance, human relations, furnishings, building and grounds, health, and more. “I worked 10-12 hours per week, and I served until about 2001. I loved working with the residents, and I made some wonderful friends.”

Shirley said that when she and her husband Robert decided that they were ready to move into a senior living community several years ago, “there was never really any question. I knew we’d move to Eastcastle Place. I like the location, the size, and the philosophy. It’s friendly, and it feels like family,” she said. She also liked the fact that as a Life Plan Community, in addition to independent living, Eastcastle Place offers assisted living, memory support, rehabilitation, and long-term skilled care should one’s health needs change.

After having spent so much time volunteering at Eastcastle Place, Shirley said she had high expectations for her new home. Those have been met and exceeded. ”There’s such a strong feeling of community,” she said, adding that the campus is beautiful, the staff is friendly, and the amenities are great.

With a variety of apartment sizes and styles from which to choose, the Anthonys moved into the beautiful Classic model in the contemporary building, boasting two spacious bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and a deck. “It’s very spacious,” said Shirley. “We love the apartment.”

At Eastcastle Place, Shirley said that she and Robert both go to fitness classes and work on the community garden. Shirley is also involved with the health committee, which is resident-run. “We share residents’ concerns, publicize information such as flu shots availability, and more. I’m legally blind, so it’s really important to me to be aware of other residents in the same situation. I like to be able to share information on how to make things easier in the building,” she said.

Shirley concluded that she’s happy to call the place at which she once worked, “home. I take a little bit of pride in this. I’ve always been pleased to be associated with Eastcastle Place,” she said.
