D'Amico Bill to Protect Motorists, Help Create Stronger Auto Insurance Program

"It's crucial that we continue with the current program which keeps consumers protected from uninsured drivers on our highways."

Today, I passed legislation giving the Secretary of State more time to develop and expand their auto insurance program to ensure uninsured motorists don’t endanger our roads. We also received news that the governor signed my bill into law requiring plumbers undergo continuing education that will make sure they are receiving quality training. We still have a long way to go in Springfield, and I renew my call to sit down with the governor and Republican colleagues, but these bills will help protect consumers and working class families in Illinois!

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Legislation sponsored by state Rep. John C. D’Amico, D-Chicago, to ensure that Illinois’ current mandatory insurance law remains in place while a new program is developed within the Secretary of State’s office was sent to the governor Friday with overwhelming bipartisan support from members of the Illinois General Assembly.

“While the Secretary of State’s office continues working to develop a more comprehensive mandatory insurance program using the most modern technology available, it’s crucial that we continue with the current program which keeps consumers protected from uninsured drivers on our highways,” D’Amico said. “This legislation allows them to continue using the current program until a new one is in place.”

Prior legislation, House Bill 5692, sponsored by D’Amico in 2014 created a committee composed of insurance industry professionals and law enforcement officials to help develop a recommendation for a new process for verifying insurance in the state. D’Amico says the committee has two meetings remaining before they make their final recommendations and that in the interim this legislation will allow the Secretary of State’s office to continue checking the status of drivers’ insurance. Secretary of State Jesse White commended D’Amico for his continuing efforts to help on traffic safety issues.

“Whether it’s helping us make the roads of Illinois among the safest in the nation, Rep. John D’Amico has been a great legislative partner with my office,” White said. “I commend him for sponsoring legislation that keeps Illinois on track to establish one of the most modern and effective insurance verification programs in the entire country.”
