D'Amico's "Sign and Drive" Bill Signed Into Law

On August 9, 2014, Governor Quinn signed SB 2583 (Public Act 98-0870) into law. The legislation was sponsored by Illinois State Representative John D’Amico and Illinois State Senator Michael Noland.
This legislation was unanimously approved in both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly. Under the new law, motorists cited for petty offenses under the Illinois Vehicle Code will be allowed to sign the citation as a guarantee that they will comply with its terms by either appearing in court or paying the required fine. As before, the Secretary of State can suspend the driving privileges of any motorist who does not comply.
Prior to this bill, motorists were required to forfeit their driver’s license as bond. The license would be returned to the motorist upon resolution of a court proceeding or payment of the fine. This type of bond was required in order to ensure that the motorist comply with the terms of the citation.

“Senate Bill 2583 is a piece of commonsense legislation aimed at cutting down on the instances of identification misuse or misplacement,” Representative D’Amico said. “This bill will get our safe drivers back on the road and keep our state moving forward.”
The new law goes into effect on January 1, 2015.
