NILES, IL — The following information comes from the Niles Police Department as a record of police activity. Readers are reminded that an arrest is not an indication of guilt, criminal charges are often dropped or reduced and all persons named are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
INCIDENTS

A resident in the 7300 block of Oak Park reported that someone broke into a 1997 Toyota and stole $20 in cash.

A resident in the 8200 block of Newcastle reported that someone entered their unlocked 2006 Toyota and stole two 12 packs of soda and two medicine containers.
VEHICLE TRESPASS
A resident in the 8200 block New England reported that someone entered an unlocked 2008 Saturn and rummaged through the vehicle without taking anything.
BURGLARY TO VEHICLE
A resident in the 8200 block of New England reported that someone entered an unlocked 2009 Mitsubishi and stole an iPod between 3 p.m. on July 17 and 8:50 a.m. on July 18.
THEFT
A patron in the 9200 block of Milwaukee reported someone stole a backpack containing personal property on July 18 between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.
RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY
A resident of the 8200 block of Elizabeth reported that someone forcibly entered an apartment on July 17 between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The burglars stole jewelry and some cash. The investigation continues.
CRIMINAL TRESPASSING
Around noon on July 17, a woman was found going through a car in the 8200 block of Dempster. When she was confronted by the car's owner, she said she was looking for a cigarette. The woman fled before police arrived and nothing appeared to be missing from the car.
BURGLARY TO VEHICLE
A briefcase with two laptops and a social security card was stolen from an unlocked 2012 Cadillac in a parking lot in the 8600 block of Dempster between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on July 15.
IDENTITY THEFT
A patron in the 8500 block of Golf Road reported that on July 16 at 10:44 a.m. someone had made an unauthorized purchase of $106.75 on his credit card.
THEFT
Someone cut the lock and stole a 26'' Granite Peak Bicycle from the 5700 block of Touhy between 8:53 p.m. and 8:55 p.m. on July 16. The bike was entered into the state theft database.
THEFT
Someone cut the catalytic converter off of a 2002 Honda van parked in the 7700 block of Oketo on July 17 around 5:30 a.m.
IDENTITY THEFT
A resident of the 7000 block of Dobson told police someone opened a Verizon account and purchased an iPhone using the resident's personal information between June 1 and July 15.
THEFT
The owner of an auction company reported on July 14 at 10:30 a.m. that two signs were missing from two street corners.
CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A resident in the 7700 block of Oleander reported on that someone broke a lamp on the driveway between 10:30 p.m on July 13 and 7:30 a.m. on July 14. for a cost of $100.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
WARRANT
Dylan Ibrahim, 22, of the 9500 block of Lawler in Skokie, was arrested July 19 at 11:03 a.m. at the intersection of Washington and Park after he was stopped for an equipment violation and found to have a warrant for speeding more than 26 mph over the limit. He was taken into custody and posted bond on the warrant.
RETAIL THEFT
Kimberly M. Porras, 25, was arrested and charged with retail theft on July 18 at 3:47 p.m. at Golf Mill Center after allegedly stealing $164 worth of cosmetics.
SUSPENDED LICENSE
A 23-year-old Park Ridge man was arrested July 17 at 9:20 a.m. near the intersection of Harlem and Coyle after he was pulled over for using an electronic device while driving. He was charged with driving with a suspended license and cited for use of an electronic device and no valid proof of insurance.
DUI
Kurt J. Hummel, 20, of the 5900 block of Crain in Morton Grove, was arrested July 17 at 2:15 p.m. after he was involved in a traffic crash after making an improper turn. Police determined he was under the influence of alcohol and charged him with driving under the influence and cited him for improper turn at an intersection.
DUI
Daniel Connolly, 22, of the 5300 block of West Argyle Street in Chicago, was arrested on July 17 at 2:39 a.m. after he was involved in a traffic crash and fled the scene. He was found in his vehicle a short time later and police determined he was intoxicated. He was charged with two counts of driving under the influence, one count of leaving the scene of an accident and cited for no proof of insurance.
SUSPENDED LICENSE
A 37-year-old Itasca woman was arrested on July 14 at 11:53 a.m. near the intersection of Cumberland and Peter Terrace after she was pulled over for a defective windshield. She was charged with driving with a suspended license and cited for the windshield.
SUSPENDED LICENSE
A 46-year-old Chicago man was arrested July 14 at 2:08 p.m. near the intersection of Ballard and Clifton after he was pulled over for disregarding a stop sign. He was charged with driving with a suspended license and cited for disobeying a stop sign.
DUI
Aaron T. Ceplina, 32, of the 3600 block of Hamilton Avenue in Chicago, was arrested July 14 at 3:43 a.m. after he was stopped for speeding and found to have an open container of alcohol and appeared intoxicated. He was charged with two counts of driving under the influence, illegal transportation of alcohol and speeding 57 mph in a 35 mph zone.
DUI
Jose A. Martinez, 53, of the 4600 block of North Karlov Avenue in Chicago was arrested July 15 at 3:17 a.m. in the 7300 block of Milwaukee after he was pulled over for speeding and improper lane usage and found to be intoxicated. he was charged with driving under the influence, speeding 51 mph in a 25 mph zone and improper lane usage.
SUSPENDED LICENSE
A 41-year-old Berwyn man was arrested July 16 at 11:22 p.m. at the intersection of Dempster and Grand and charged with driving with a suspended license, expired registration and no proof of insurance after he was pulled over for expired tags.
DUI
Oscar A. Macz, no age or address provided, was arrested July 16 in the 7400 block of Milwaukee after he was pulled over for speeding. Police found him to be intoxicated and took him into custody. The arresting officer found he had an unsecured 9 mm handgun in violation of his concealed carry permit. He was charged with two counts of Driving under the influence, a violation of concealed carry law, illegal transportation of alcohol and speeding between 26-34 mph above the posted limit.
SUSPENDED LICENSE
A 19-year-old Lincolnwood man was arrested July 16 at 11:28 a.m. in the 8700 block of Milwaukee after he was stopped for speeding and found to have a suspended license. He was charged with driving with a suspended license and cited for speeding 60 mph in a 35 mph zone.
BATTERY
An 18-year-old resident of Niles was involved in a dispute with a 15-year-old boy over a possible theft of a cell phone. A pushing match ensured, and the 18-year-old punched the victim two or three times in the left side of the face with a closed face, police were told. The teen was taken into custody on July 16 at 8:52 p.m. outside the Xsport Fitness center in the 9200 block of Milwaukee and charged with battery. The 15-year-old suffered a concussion and bruising to the left side of his face and his mother wished to sign complaints.
TOBACCO SALES TO MINORS
Establishments in the following blocks were cited for sale of tobacco to a minor after clerks sold tobacco products to minors in sting operations supervised by Niles police.
- 9000 block of Golf on July 15 at 12:09 p.m.
- 8500 block of Golf on July 15 at 1:36 p.m.
- 9000 block of Milwaukee on July 15 at 3 p.m.
- 8500 block of West Dempster on July 15 at 4:52 p.m.
- 9300 block of Milwaukee on July 16 at 12:35 p.m.
