Niles Community Planning Workshop

The Village of Niles, with assistance from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP), is creating an Environmental Action Plan (EAP) to build on the Niles 2030 Comprehensive Plan’s recommendations and provide a roadmap for reaching long-term sustainability goals. As part of that effort, the Village is inviting local residents, business owners, community leaders, and other stakeholders to attend a special community planning workshop.

The workshop will be held on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Village of Niles Senior Center (999 Civic Center Drive, Niles IL 60714). Activities will include an overview of the planning process as well as an interactive brainstorming exercise to guide participants in identifying their sustainability goals for the Village.

For information or to RSVP, contact Cynthia Hernandez of CMAP (312-386-8623 or chernandez@cmap.illinois.gov) or visit www.cmap.illinois.gov/niles.

The planning process will consist of three distinct phases. The first phase will include a thorough review of Niles’ existing conditions, particularly as related to environmental topic areas. The second phase will focus on setting broad sustainability goals for the Village and brainstorming ways to implement those goals through specific actions and strategies. During the third phase, the EAP will be drafted and reviewed with Village staff and officials, as well as members of the general public. The EAP is slated for completion by the end of the year.

CMAP’s Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program, funded by a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Sustainable Communities Regional Planning grant, is helping 70 local governments, nonprofits, and intergovernmental organizations to address local issues at the intersection of transportation, land use, and housing, including the natural environment, economic growth, and community development. In response to the LTA Year One call for projects, CMAP received over 220 proposals from more than 130 applicants.  Current projects include local comprehensive plans and more-specialized ones for housing, water, transit oriented redevelopment, and overall sustainability.  Year Two proposals are due August 1, 2012.
