'Fake And Worthless' Rolex Traded For $1,300

A man on Golf Road convinced a victim he was stranded in Niles and needed money to get back to Florida before driving off in an SUV.

NILES, IL - A man who told a Niles resident that he and his family were stranded and needed to get home to Florida ended up conning the victim out of more than $1,000, according to a report from the Niles Police Department.

The victim told police that on Oct. 7 in the 9100 block of Golf Road he was approached by a man with dark hair, appearing to be between 35 and 40 years old. The man solicited money, stating that he and his family were stranded in Niles and needed to get back home to the southeast and offered the victim gold jewelry and a Rolex watch.

According to the police report, the victim traded $1,300 to the man in exchange for the jewelry and the watch, which was later determined to be "fake and worthless."

The man fled the area in a white SUV, the victim told police.
