Fatal Niles Crash Was Not Hit-And-Run: Police

The driver who fatally struck a 72-year-old Niles man Thursday stayed on the scene, police said.

NILES, IL — The driver that fatally struck a pedestrian in Niles Thursday stayed on the scene, according to police. The incident was not a hit-and-run, as police first reported.

Michael Potwora, 72, of Niles, was crossing Greenwood Avenue at Betty Terrace shortly before 6:30 p.m. when he was hit by a northbound SUV. He was taken to Lutheran General Hospital and was pronounced dead at 7:09 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Niles police initially said a white SUV or pickup truck struck Potwora, was rear-ended by another vehicle and fled the scene. But police said Friday evening Potwora was actually struck by a gray 2016 Jeep Patriot that remained on scene.

"Original reports indicated that a vehicle had fled the scene prior to police arrival," Sgt. Tony Scipione said. "However, based on the ongoing investigation, Niles investigators have determined that not to be true."

The driver may have lied about another vehicle striking Potwora and fleeing, WLS reported. His widow said the couple of 18 years had been married just four months ago. Potwora was on his way home from the store after purchasing milk and a greeting card, she said.
