HHGregg Closing Niles Store; 88 U.S. Locations To Be Shuttered

INDIANAPOLIS — Six Illinois stores — including Arlington Heights, Schaumburg and Niles — are among the 88 hhgregg locations the consumer electronics retail chain will be closing across the country this spring as part of its financial turnaround efforts, the company announced Thursday.

The strategic closings, which also include three distribution centers, are in markets that aren't profitable for the company, Robert J. Riesbeck, hhgregg's president and CEO, stated in a release that listed the affected locations.

"We have determined that the economics of the affected locations will not allow us to achieve our overall goal of becoming a profitable company again … ," he stated in the release. "[W]e have identified a number of underperforming stores, as well as store locations that are no longer strong shopping destinations due to changes in the local retail shopping landscape."

This down-sizing also illustrates the Indianapolis-based retailer attempting to match resources with corporate goals and improve customers' in-store and online shopping experiences, the release added.

Inventory at the affected locations will be sold off in the coming weeks, and the closings should be finished by mid-April, the retailer said. About 1,500 hhgregg positions will be eliminated by the closings, and in the end, the multi-regional chain will have 132 stores in the United States.

The six Illinois locations that will be shuttered include:

• Arlington Heights: 35 W. Rand Road (at Annex at Arlington)
• Bloomingdale: 340 W. Army Trail Road
• Champaign: 718 W. Town Center Blvd.
• Niles: 5701 Touhy Ave.
• Schaumburg: 1470 E. Golf Road (at Woodfield Village Green)
• Springfield: 2501 Wabash Ave. (at White Oaks Mall)

"This is a proactive decision to streamline our store footprint in the markets where we have been, and will continue to be, important to our customers, vendor partners and communities," Riesbeck stated. "We feel strongly that the markets we will remain in are the right ones for our customers and our business model."
