Interrupted Burglar Flees Officer: Morton Grove Crimes

MORTON GROVE, IL — The following information comes from the Morton Grove Police Department as a record of police activity. Readers are reminded that an arrest by the police does not constitute a finding of guilt, criminal charges — representing merely accusations by the state — are often dropped or reduced and all persons named are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

INCIDENTS

DECEPTIVE PRACTICES
On July 18, a resident in the 5500 block of Madison Street told police someone had made unauthorized purchases using a debit card.

IDENTITY THEFT
On July 18, a resident in the 6600 block of Maple Street reported someone opened multiple credit cards using the resident’s name.

THEFT
On July 18, a resident of the 8600 block of Ferris Avenue reported someone stole a UPS package.

STOLEN VEHICLE
An unlocked Audi with the keys left inside was stolen from a driveway the 5400 block of Warren Street on July 19. The vehicle was later recovered in Chicago.

BURGLARY TO MOTOR VEHICLE
On July 19, a resident of the 7900 block of Linder Avenue reported that someone entered an unlocked vehicle and stole change and phone chargers.

BURGLARY TO MOTOR VEHICLE
On July 20, a resident in the 9000 block of Major Avenue reported that someone stole change and a spare key from a vehicle. The resident thought the vehicle had been locked.

BURGLARY TO MOTOR VEHICLE
On July 20, a resident in the 8600 block of Major Avenue reported that a car door was found open but nothing was missing from inside.

THEFT
On July 21, a resident in the 8500 block of Fernald Avenue reported that someone stole a Trek bicycle off of the back porch. The bike was reported locked via a cable lock at the time.

BURGLARY
On July 22, police on routine patrol noticed a vehicle had been left running parked in front of a strip mall in the 9200 block of Waukegan Road. The officer noticed a man come running from around the building and entered the running vehicle, ignoring the officer’s commands to stop. He sped away in the vehicle, but the officer terminated the pursuit after the driver refused to stop. Police later found one of the nearby businesses had been burglarized after checking the area.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
On July 22, a patron at the Village Plaza parking lot in the 7300 block of Dempster Street reported a red minivan with two people in side pulled up and blocked her vehicle. A man walked over to her car and said she had a dent in her vehicle’s rear quarter panel and offered to fix it. The patron told the man she did not have a dent, but exited her vehicle to find a new dent. She refused the man’s offer and left the area.

IDENTITY THEFT
On July 24, a resident in the 8600 block of Ferris Avenue reported that he bought a vehicle from a dealership in Villa Park, but about a month later someon opened numerous unauthorized new credit cards using his personal information.

THEFT FROM MOTOR VEHICLE
On July 24, a resident of the 5800 block of South Park Avenue reported that someone had stolen change out of a vehicle. The resident said the daughter had likely left the vehicle unlocked.

BURGLARY FROM MOTOR VEHICLE
On July 25, a resident of the 5700 block of Reba Street reported that someone stole sunglasses out of a car that had its window left down.

ARRESTS

SUSPENDED LICENSE
A 35-year-old Elmwood Park woman was stopped for a traffic violation in the 9300 block of Harlem Avenue on July 19 and found to be driving with a suspended license.

RETAIL THEFT
Salim Barkho, 51, of the 4300 block of Oakton Street in Skokie, was arrested in connection with a retail theft at Menards in the 6300 block of Oakton Street on July 20. Police said he had previously been identified by a witness in a photo lineup.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT
Jacob R. Glickman, 33, of the 8300 block of Concord Drive, was arrested July 20 and charged with disorderly conduct. Police said on multiple occasions he let his dog run off leash and attempted to make contact with children at a day camp in Austin Park. Police said Glickman had been notified by staff not to make contact with or speak with the children at the camp, yet he still did.

DUI
Valentin C. Lopez, 47, of the 1900 block of 55th Court in Cicero, was arrested July 21 near the intersection of Dempster Street and Leheigh Avenue after Skokie police had reported a reckless driver. Morton Grove police said they located the vehicle, stopped it for a traffic violations, found the driver failed a field sobriety test and arrested him for driving under the influence.

Always lock your vehicles and do not leave the keys inside. We, along with our neighboring towns, are experiencing a sharp increase in vehicles being burglarized and stolen. The vast majority of the burglarized vehicles have been left unlocked and all of our stolen vehicles have had their keys left within.
