Library Business Manager Leaves At Key Time

Newspaper says he was forced out after one trustee shared an observation.

The Niles Library is embarking on a $4 million renovation plan--a time when trustees and staff would typically need sound financial information from the business manager. However, Jim McNutt, the business manager, has resigned, library trustees confirmed Wednesday.

Bugle Newspapers reported that an unnamed trustee said he or she smelled alcohol on McNutt's breath in the week preceding the Feb. 20 board meeting. Two days later, McNutt submitted a letter of resignation.

McNutt had been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol for the third time in November 2010, according to the Pioneer Press, and was sentenced to 90 days in county jail and two years of probation.

"Jim was a good guy, and did his job well," said Dennis O'Donovan, a library trustee, at a meet and greet session the library held for trustees and Friends of the Library Wednesday. "He was always prepared for meetings, and he always had the answers. He'll be missed."

Other staff members will be able to help provide financial information during the upcoming budgeting process, he said.
