Morton Grove, Niles Announce Joint Water Project With Evanston

The collaborative water supply improvement project aims to stabilize rates and rebuild water infrastructure.

The Villages of Morton Grove and Niles are partnering with the City of Evanston to supply residents of Morton Grove and Niles with safe, high-quality water, at a stabilized rate that allows for future infrastructure improvements. This project will construct a new water supply system from the City of Evanston, through Skokie to Morton Gove and Niles. This project will result in capital improvements for the four communities including reconstruction of streets, curbs and gutters along the route.

For decades, Morton Grove and Niles have been reliably receiving their water from Lake Michigan via the City of Chicago’s treatment and transmission systems. Due to a need for rate stabilization, the pursuit of Lake Michigan water from the City of Evanston was purely an economic decision. As water contracts near their expiration dates, the Morton Grove Niles Water Commission was formed to collaboratively develop a plan that would provide residents with a more affordable water supply. The commission and Evanston officials reached an agreement to supply water to over 50,000 residents of Morton Grove and Niles, saving the communities a total of $21,000 per day in water costs. This collective effort provides benefits for every community involved in this project.

Work is scheduled to begin within the next 30 days and is planned to be completed by August 2019.
