Niles Crime: Death Investigation, 'Weird' Man With Hand Down Pants, Publicly Intoxicated Person Felt 'Disrespected:' Police

NILES, IL — The following information is courtesy of the Niles Police Department. It is a record of police activity.

DEATH INVESTIGATION

On Jan. 29 at 7:00 a.m. police were called to an apartment on the 6300 block of Touhy. The caller said he went to check up on his friend, a 57-year-old man, and found the door unlocked and his friend lying in bed and unresponsive. The Niles Fire Department arrived, found no sign of life and the man was pronounced dead at 7:15 a.m.. Police said there were no obvious signs of trauma, and the living conditions were extremely filthy. On Jan. 31, the Cook County Medical Examiner stated the victim had died due to "health related conditions."

PUBLIC INTOXICATION

On Jan. 29 around 8:30 p.m. police were called to a gas station on the 8500 block of Golf Road on a check for well-being. They spoke to a 55 year-old man from Mt Prospect who was looking for a ride home with a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. When he was asked how much he had to drink and replied he had some to drink. He admitted to vomiting in the alley. He was offered a field sobriety test, and transported to hospital for medical issues "complicated by his level of intoxication." Police issued him two citations for Public Intoxication and cost of emergency services.

SUSPICIOUS INCIDENT

On Jan. 30 at 11:26 a.m. a 40-year-old Chicago woman was at a retail store on the 5600 block of Touhy on her cellphone when she noticed a man, about 5’5” in height, about 200 lbs with dark hair. She said the man's hand was down his pants and he was touching himself in a lewd manner. She became scared and walked away and the man continue to follow her. Another customer confirmed her account, saying the man was acting “weird”. Responding officers checked the area without being able to locate the man. The suspect appeared to have left the area as the victim went to report the incident to the store's manager, who walked her to her car.

RETAIL THEFT

On Jan. 29 at 6:41 p.m. police responded to a retail theft, where they met the loss prevention agent from a retail store on the 8200 block of Golf who related they observed a man exit the store with a shopping cart full of $175 worth of groceries. The man drove away with the property, but the agent provided a license plate and was willing to sign complaints.

IDENTITY THEFT

On Jan. 29 at about 6:00 p.m. police spoke with a 40-year-old woman regarding an identity theft. The victim stated she sued a gas pump and had to pay for gas at a gas station in Elk Grove. The victim left the card with the clerk and then pumped her gas. She then recovered her card and went to work. She then discovered that an unknown person used her debit card on line for $727.76 purchase. A second purchase was made for about $200. On Jan. 27, an attempt was made on the debit card but the card had been cancelled. The victim requests a follow up and will sign complaints.

DECEPTIVE PRACTICE

On Jan. 30 at 1:40 p.m. the manager of a retail store on the 9100 block of Milwaukee reported that a 40-year-old man had cashed a check in the amount of $2,750 under a business account name. The currency exchange deposited, but the check's bank returned the check for insufficient funds. An employee spoke to the check writer who told the employee he would come in and pay back the funds on Jan. 26. When that day arrived, the employee spoke to the man again who said he would not pay back the money and hung up. The caller asked for a follow up investigation.

THEFT

Around noon on Jan. 30 a victim reported that their wallet had been taken while they was shopping at a retail store on the 8900 block of Milwaukee. The wallet had been in a purse in their shopping cart. Taken was a wallet containing an Illinois driver’s license, numerous credit cards and approximately $1,300. The victim requests a follow up and is willing to sign complaints.

THREAT

On Jan. 31 around 7:15 p.m. a complainant came in with her 13-year-old nephew about an incident that occurred at Golf Mill Mall. Her nephew said he was at the mall when he ran into two former friends, also teens, who were upset about the way the aunt had been treating his sister because they used to hang out with her. One of the two ex-friends threatened to rob the aunt's home if the she didn’t back off. The nephew said as he was walking in the mall, he noticed the two boys were behind him with their fists raised in a fighting posture.

RETAIL THEFT

On Feb. 1 at 5:44 p.m. hours the loss prevention agent was conducting an inventory of missing electronics at retail store at Golf Mill Center. The agent learned that on Jan. 5 at 7:00 p.m. four men or boys between the ages of 16-25 removed headphones, batteries, at a loss to the store of $195. On Jan. 19 the caller discovered four video-games and a remote controlled drone, Bluetooth speaker were taken totaling a $520. The same four are suspected.

DECEPTIVE PRACTICES

On Feb. 1 shortly before 2:00 p.m. the manager at 7500 block of Milwaukee said a man attempted to cash fake check from a business in Chicago, saying it was unusual for a business to hand print the recipient’s name and amount of the check. A call to the business revealed the check was not issued by them and should be considered fraudulent. The employee could not find a record for that check number and believes it was stolen. When the manager told the offender that she was keeping the check and calling the police, the offender he said he was going to wait for police, but left prior to the Officers arrival. Investigation pending.

ASSAULT

On Feb. 1 at 11:00 a.m. the manager of a restaurant on the 7100 block of Dempster said an ex-employee threatened him. The employee had been terminated Jan. 11 due to anger issues involving other employees. The suspect, a 25-year-old man from Chicago, allegedly told the manager if he didn’t get his 40 hours a work week there was going to be a problem The suspect had called on Feb. 1 and was upset because he was denied unemployment due to being terminated, he then threatened to harm the the manager. The manager had also been receiving text messages from an unknown number suggesting the manager needs to fix the problem.

CRIMINAL TRESPASS

On Feb. 1 at 8:23 a.m. the employee from the construction company reported that someone smashed out a window on the construction trailer on the 7000 block of Milwaukee. The door was pulled and ajar, but nothing appeared to be missing. An evidence technician processed the scene.

PUBLIC INTOXICATION

On Feb. 2, shortly after 7:00 p.m., police were called for an unwanted subject at a bar on the 9600 block of Milwaukee. Police observed a 42-year-old woman from Des Plaines standing in the inside doorway yelling at the employee. Police asked her to exit the bar and speak outside. She said she was upset because she felt she was being disrespected. Police spoke to the caller, an employee, who said she had been at the bar for a few hours and continued to yell at people. The caller got tired of her yelling for no reason and told her to leave. The complainant just wanted her to leave. She was placed into a cab and sent home after being issued two ordinance citations, for public intoxication and for cost of emergency services.

BURGLARY

On Feb. 2 around 7:00 a.m. hours the a caller reported he parked his 2007 Mercedes Van on the cul-de-sac adjacent to the 8200 block of Ozark. In the morning, he discovered the right front quarter glass of the front passenger door was removed and laying on the grass next to the vehicle. Someone, he said, had forcibly entered the van and taken about $400 worth of tools. An evidence technician processed the scene.

On Feb. 3 around 6:00 p.m. a resident returned home and discovered their home had been burglarized on 6800 block of Oakton. This incident is currently under investigation.

On Feb. 3 at 7:18 p.m. the victim’s locker had been entered and his wallet was taken was his wallet, credit cards, drivers license and approximately $150 at the Fitness Center on the 9200 block of Milwaukee. Investigation pending.

On Feb. 3 at 1:17 a.m. a man reported over the last six months he has discovered that money has been missing out of his dresser. He stated in January he discovered clothing missing. The victim’s door does not appear to be tampered with. The victim did not want the scene processed at an apartment on the 9200 block of Maryland.
