Niles Firefighters 'Fill The Boot' For Hurricane Harvey Help

More than $10,000 has been raised so far in donations to the Red Cross, the Fire Chief said.

NILES, IL — Members of the Niles Fire Department gathered more than $10,000 in donations to help Hurricane Harvey relief using the tried-and-true "Fill the Boot" fundraising method, the Niles Journal reports. During a two-day period last week, firefighters carried a boot as they walked through traffic in Dempster Street and on Greenwood Avenue picking up donations from drivers for the Red Cross's Harvey relief fund. Plus, an extra boot was placed at a bank nearby Fire Station No. 2 on Dempster.

Niles Fire Chief Marty Field told the Journal members of his department picked up 2.5 gallons of change. Along with cash from motorists and money from the boot at the bank, firefighters had collected a total of $10,100 when it was counted Tuesday.
