Niles Teacher Named Golden Apple Finalist

Art Teacher Tina Daskalopoulos, of D63's Nelson Elementary, nominated for education award.

NILES, IL — East Maine School District 63 Art Teacher Tina Daskalopoulos has been named one of 34 finalists (out of over 600 nominees) for a 2017 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. Daskalopoulos, who joined the District in 1988, teaches at its Nelson Elementary School in Niles.

"I bring to my work with students the many artists who have inspired me," explains Daskalopoulos. "And so many do -- Pablo Picasso especially because he never stopped exploring new things. I try to convey to my students that creating art is important whether or not they end up as professional artists. Learning to be creative is a skill that can help them on their unique pathways to success."

"District 63 is committed to teaching excellence," noted Dr. Scott Clay, Superintendent, "And so naturally we're thrilled that Golden Apple has recognized Ms. Daskalopoulos' fine work. But we've always been impressed with her talent and dedication to our students."
