Village services are scheduled to reopen Thursday.

As Niles digs out of the major snowfall and enters a below-zero cold snap, services are slowly coming back to normal.

Garbage pickup will be delayed one day, with the Thursday pickup on Friday and the Friday pickup on Saturday.

Kids will get one more day off school in the districts serving Niles, including East Maine School District 63, Park Ridge-Niles Community School District 64, , Maine Township High School District 207 and Niles Township High School District 219.

"My hat is off to Public Services Director Scott Jochim and his personnel who battled the storm all night, along with a water main break or two," said Assistant Village Manager Steve Vinezeano.

The Niles Police Department temporarily acquired some SUVs, which helped them navigate the snow more easily. In addition, the Fire Department increased staffing to help them shovel their way in and out of homes where they needed to make emergency calls, according to Vinezeano.

If residents' furnaces go out, the village can use the Niles Family Fitness Center as a warming center. ComEd did not have any issues with power outages in Niles during the blizzard.
