Top Stories of 2012 In Morton Grove

Morton Grove seems like a quiet place, but 2012 was not a quiet year for the village. Here's a rundown of some highlights.

1. When a developer proposed in costumes with plunging necklines and short skirts, to a Dempster Street location, residents argued on Patch about outrage over the proposal vs. Morton Grove's need to bring in new business.

2. Morton Grove resident which is next door to his home, during busy Eid services. No one was harmed, but and police later said it could have killed someone. 

3. Dozens of residents came to an August village board meeting to protest Lakeshore Waste's intentions to locate a garbage transfer station near Oakton and Lehigh. A Citizens' Committee also formed and researched the issue, coming out strongly against it. Mayor Dan Staackmann announced though reserving the possibility of a recycling center. 

4. Golf School District 67, which educates students from Morton Grove and Niles, floated two referendum questions on the March ballot, and both of them failed. On the Nov. 6 ballot, voters passed a construction referendum, which will allow the school to make physical improvements. The district is going to place the second referendum on the ballot again in early 2013.  

5. In School District 69, a decision by superintendent Dr. Quintin Shepherd to cancel Halloween activities and celebrations led to outrage on the part of some parents. However, the school board upheld his decision.

6. It was a bad year for train fatalities at or near the Morton Grove Metra station. A person was killed in early April, and on Dec. 14, a train struck and killed a man.  In July, a young man, but did not see a train coming; he was struck and killed.
