Whiz Kid: Leona Maliakal Places for National Forensic Competition

The Morton Grove teen and Regina Dominican junior wins top awards in the Chicago Catholic Forensic League Individual Events tournament.

○      Whiz Kids' Accomplishment: Leona competed in the Chicago Catholic Forensic League Individual Events Tournament on Saturday February 26 in Antioch. She finished third in extemporaneous speaking in the tournament and fourth overall in the League for the entire season. This qualifies her to advance to the National Catholic Forensic League Grand National Tournament in Washington D.C. on May 27 to 29.  The NCFL is an organization of private and public high schools dedicated to promoting and supporting speech and debate activities in the US and Canada.

Leona is also a member of the Mathletes team, WYSE team, and Class Leadership Board.

○      Whiz Kids' Key to Awesomeness: Leona said the key to her success has been her coaches, Mary Ann Chambers and Dianne Weinand. She also credits her teammates, especially Bridget Golembiewski and Jennifer Roxas.
