Winner of Niles Plaza Design Contest Named

A high school senior won the award for a family-oriented design. It will replace the former "Nick Blase Plaza" sign in front of Niles village hall.

Niles West High School senior Kaylin Moy posed for photos with village officials Tuesday after she won the village's design contest for a sculpture to be constructed outside village hall.

Moy's design has several elements. A standing sculpture of a stylized mother, father and child will be a central part of it. She envisioned a circle perimeter with interlocking jigsaw-puzzle pieces, each with a word such as "Love."

Village Trustee Rosemary Palicki, who chaired the plaza committee, said the jigsaw pieces element might be modified because it would be expensive to execute.

"There would be a circular perimeter on the ground, of boulders which would either have words, such as "love," and "trust" carved into them, or else they would be on plaques on the boulders," she said.

George Alpogianis, who also served on the plaza sign committee, said, "It's almost a two-part design. You can see the cutout of the father, mother and child. Around the sign will be a circle with elements of the family."

Palick said the village will next look at finding someone to execute the design and getting quotes.

"We'll be looking at different materials," she said. "For example, it could be stainless steel for the family, and it could be granite base."
