93 Tickets Issued In Northbrook For Distracted Driving Campaign
Cops ticketed 58 drivers for electronic communication device violations as part of national distracted driving awareness month.

NORTHBROOK, IL — Northbrook police issued 93 citations to distracted drivers last month as part of a two-week campaign last month. Officers ticketed 58 drivers for illegal use of electronic communication devices, turned up five uninsured motorists and two driving with suspended or revoked licenses, as well as writing up 13 speeding tickets and 15 other citations the period of April 16 to 30.
“Driver distraction is a persistent issue in Northbrook and often has life-altering consequences,” said Traffic Officer Chris Lacina. “We implemented this enforcement action to encourage motorists to drop it and drive.”
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, drivers using cellphones are four times more likely to get into an accident causing injuries, and cellphone distractions caused more than 2,000 crashes in Illinois in 2015.

“Distracted Driving Awareness Month may be over, but the Northbrook Police Department will continue working to reduce the number of drivers engaging in this dangerous behavior,” Lacina said.

The Drop It and Drive campaign was supported in part by a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation. Nearly one in four traffic crashes involve drivers using cellphones, according to the National Safety Council.
