Northbrook District 28 Earns 11th Straight Music Education Honor

District 28 was one of 31 Illinois districts recognized this year by the NAMM Foundation.

NORTHBROOK, IL — For the 11th straight year, Northbrook School District 28 has been recognized year by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation as one of the Best Communities for Music Education. The district was one of 31 school districts recognized in Illinois this year, out of 850 school districts across the state.

The designation is awarded each year after what the district described as a comprehensive application process detailing the level of curricular, extracurricular, and community-wide support for music education. According to the NAMM Foundation, the award recognizes the District 28 community for its support and commitment to music education and for providing music access and education to all.

"I am grateful to be a part of a team of music educators that continually strives to provide the best music education for our kids," said Greg Scapillato, District 28 band director, who submitted the application. "I am also deeply grateful for the leadership and support from our administration, Dr. Pearson, and our Board of Education. I am honored to serve our District 28 community, and am continually humbled by the dedication and support of our parents, and the amazing achievements of our students."

District 28 said its music programs engage children of all backgrounds and abilities in performing, creating, and responding through music. The district said the program is designed to foster collaborative music-making, support individual growth in each learner, and keep appreciation and involvement in music open to all as a lifelong experience.

Throughout their time in District 28, students have the opportunity to participate in band, orchestra, and choir, according to the district. Superintendent Dr. Jason Pearson said the recognition reflects both the district’s work and the community’s support for music education.

"This is an impressive accomplishment. We have an amazing team of music educators and a very supportive community. Ultimately, our students benefit from a superb experience with music in our schools," Pearson said.

The recognition marks another year of statewide acknowledgement for District 28's music offerings and places the Northbrook district among a small share of Illinois systems honored by the NAMM Foundation this year.
