Kids’ Duathlon Returns To Northbrook’s Ed Rudolph

NORTHBROOK, IL — Young athletes can test their cycling and running skills when the Northbrook Park District's Kids' Duathlon returns Friday, July 24.

The event combines bicycle laps around the Ed Rudolph Velodrome with a run through adjacent Meadowhill Park. It is open to children ages 5 to 14, from experienced racers to first-time participants.

"This is such a fun event," Recreation Supervisor Isaac Urow said in a news release. "It's a great way to showcase the unique Velodrome and introduce kids to the sport of cycling."

Urow said the sight of children riding around the track while spectators cheer creates "a truly memorable and heartwarming experience."

Race Distances By Age

The race course and distances are adjusted for each age group:

• Children ages 5 to 7 will bike two quarter-mile laps around the velodrome and run a quarter-mile.
• Children ages 8 to 10 will bike two laps and run a half mile.
• Children in the oldest division will bike three laps and run 1 mile.

The Park District's release lists the event as open to ages 5 to 14, although the oldest race division was described as ages 11 to 15. Families may want to confirm eligibility with the district before registering a 15-year-old participant.

Post-Race Celebration

Following the race, participants can enjoy pizza, drinks and dessert, along with swimming at Meadowhill Aquatic Center.

The event emphasizes participation, fitness and finishing the course rather than competition alone. Spectators are welcome to attend and cheer for the racers.
