NORTHBROOK, IL — A Chicago woman found asleep behind the wheel of a Land Rover was charged with DUI, while a Northbrook man accused of driving 72 mph in a 45 mph zone also faces a DUI charge, according to the latest Northbrook Police Department reports.
Police also received reports involving nearly $10,000 taken from a bank account, stolen airline miles, burglaries to unlocked vehicles and a phone scam involving electronics.
The following information comes from Northbrook Police Department reports. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt.
Martin N. Rosas, of Zion, was charged with driving on a suspended license after police said an officer stopped a 2015 maroon Dodge Durango with suspended license plates at Lake Cook Road and Pine Street at around 7:25 p.m. Aug. 20.
His court date was set for Sept. 23.
Shahaly N. Albuja, of Chicago, was charged with DUI after an officer encountered a 2023 white Land Rover stopped in a traffic lane at Dundee Road and Skokie Boulevard at around 3:25 a.m. Aug. 21, according to police.
Police said Albuja was slumped over the wheel asleep. The officer knocked on the window several times before Albuja woke up, according to the report.
Police said Albuja appeared intoxicated and failed field sobriety tests. Albuja was given a Sept. 8 court date.
Police and firefighters responded at around 1:31 p.m. Aug. 22 to a residence in the 1000 block of Spring Hill Drive after a homeowner stopped breathing.
The person had an active do-not-resuscitate order and died of natural causes, according to police. The family contacted a funeral home.
Ray I. Krepak, of Northbrook, was charged with misdemeanor speeding, improper lane usage, DUI and illegal transportation of cannabis after police said an officer saw a 2020 white Volkswagen Passat traveling at 72 mph in a 45 mph zone at Dundee and Waukegan roads at around 1:04 a.m. Aug. 23.
Police said the vehicle also crossed the roadway's center line. Krepak appeared intoxicated and had an open bag of cannabis in the vehicle, according to police.
His court date was set for Oct. 6.
Several Northbrook residents reported at around 6:26 a.m. Aug. 24 that someone had entered unlocked vehicles throughout Northbrook and rummaged through the contents.
Police said small amounts of money were taken from some of the vehicles.
A resident of the 2200 block of Illinois Road reported Aug. 24 that someone had hacked into her airline miles account and changed the username and password.
Police said $400 worth of airline miles were stolen. The resident was working with the company to have the miles replaced.
A resident of the 2100 block of Royal Ridge Drive reported Aug. 25 that someone had gained access to his bank account and changed the password.
Police said money was transferred on various dates from the victim's account into two other bank accounts, resulting in a total loss of $9,850.
At Dundee Road and Skokie Boulevard, an officer saw a gray Kia stopped at a gas station at around 7:07 p.m. Aug. 26 and learned the registered owner had an expired driver's license, according to police.
When the officer tried to make a traffic stop, police said the driver did not stop and accelerated to a high speed. The vehicle was last seen fleeing Northbrook on the Edens Expressway.
A resident of the 2400 block of Oak Avenue reported Aug. 27 receiving text messages from someone claiming to represent AT&T.
Police said the person offered a promotion involving electronic devices and instructed the resident to purchase several phones and Apple Watches at local stores.
After the purchases were made, the resident was told there had been an error and was instructed to send all the devices to a purported warehouse. The resident complied before realizing the person was not affiliated with AT&T and that no refund would be issued.
