NORTHBROOK, IL — A reported online romance scam involving a request for $180,000, two airline miles thefts and a man accused of causing disturbances at Village Hall are among the latest cases reported by the Northbrook Police Department.
The following information comes from Northbrook Police Department reports. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt.
A complainant in the 1100 block of Lake Cook Road told police Aug. 29 that his mother was being scammed by someone she met online.
According to police, the person claimed to have been the victim of a bombing in the Middle East and told the woman he had feelings for her before requesting $180,000.
The woman's family recognized it as a scam and froze her credit and personal information, police said. The family was also trying to recover money that had already been taken from her account.
A complainant in the 2100 block of Center Avenue told police Aug. 30 that he received a call from someone claiming to work for Citibank.
The caller said he was investigating the complainant's Citibank account, but the complainant told him he did not have one.
After providing personal information, the complainant realized the call was an attempt to obtain his information, according to police.
Tejas R. Desai, of Northbrook, was arrested Aug. 30 after an officer saw a 2025 white BMW X7 make a left turn and nearly strike another vehicle near Pfingsten Road and White Pine Drive, police said.
The vehicle also failed to signal, according to the report.
Police said Desai appeared intoxicated and failed field sobriety tests. He was charged with failure to yield while turning left, failure to use a turn signal, DUI, DUI with a blood alcohol concentration over 0.08 and illegal transportation of alcohol.
Police listed Desai's blood alcohol concentration as .192. His court date was set for Oct. 6.
A complainant in the 1400 block of Daniel Court told police Sept. 1 that someone hacked into his airline miles account and stole $1,607.60 worth of miles.
Police said the miles were converted into gift cards. The complainant was working with the account's fraud department to have the stolen miles reimbursed.
Ryan A. Harris, of Northbrook, was charged Sept. 2 with two counts of disorderly conduct following incidents involving Northbrook Village Hall.
Police said Harris caused a breach of the peace during an Aug. 25 Village Hall board meeting by hitting windows with his fists and yelling profanities. His actions caused attendees to become fearful, according to the report.
During a separate interaction with a Village Hall employee, police said Harris again caused a scene and a breach of the peace.
His court date was set for Oct. 14.
Manuel Ocampo De Leon Y Pena, of Whiting, Indiana, was stopped Sept. 2 near Willow Road and Founders Drive after an officer saw a 2016 gray Honda CR-V with suspended license plates.
He was charged with suspended registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. His court date was set for Oct. 9.
A complainant in the 4300 block of Phyllis Drive told police Sept. 2 that someone hacked into her airline miles account and stole 493,000 miles.
According to police, the miles were used to purchase airline tickets during April and May. The complainant was working with representatives to replace the stolen miles.
Ruth A. Lizcano, of Waukegan, was stopped Sept. 3 near Waukegan and Dundee roads after an officer saw a 2013 brown GMC Yukon with suspended license plates.
Police said Lizcano had a revoked driver's license. She was charged with suspended registration, driving while license revoked and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
Her court date was set for Oct. 9.
Benjamin P. Baczewski, of Glenview, was stopped Sept. 3 near Willow and Pfingsten roads after police said an officer clocked his 2019 Jeep Wrangler traveling 79 mph in a 40 mph zone.
Baczewski was charged with misdemeanor speeding. His court date was set for Oct. 9.
