Northbrook Direct Support Professional Named Illinois Community Care Professional of the Year

NORTHBROOK, IL — A Glenkirk direct support professional who works every day to improve the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities has received statewide recognition for his service.

Daniel Bello has been named the Illinois Association of Rehabilitation Facilities' 2026 Community Care Professional of the Year, an honor recognizing outstanding frontline professionals working at community-based human services organizations across Illinois.

IARF President and CEO Josh Evans announced Bello as this year's recipient Sept. 3 during the organization's 2026 Educational Conference & Expo in East Peoria.

Bello works as a direct support professional with Northbrook-based Glenkirk, which provides services and supports for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

"Glenkirk is enormously proud that Daniel Bello has been recognized as the IARF 2026 Community Care Professional of the Year," Glenkirk CEO Kim Berenberg said. "Each day, Daniel demonstrates his passion for this work and his commitment to the people he supports."

Berenberg said Bello's empathy, patience, sense of humor, problem-solving skills and adaptability exemplify Glenkirk's mission and make him a role model for others.

The statewide honor recognizes a frontline employee at an IARF member organization who exemplifies quality care, compassion, person-centered service and commitment to the individuals and families they support.

Bello was chosen from 20 finalists nominated by community-based organizations serving children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and serious mental illnesses throughout Illinois.

"Mr. Bello truly exemplifies the spirit of this award, is an incredible ambassador for the entire Glenkirk community, and is a shining star amongst a profession so important to serving and supporting others," Evans said.

IARF has recognized a Community Care Professional of the Year at its annual conference since 2017.

The organization is Illinois' largest trade association representing community-based providers serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and serious mental illnesses. IARF members provide services at more than 900 locations statewide.

For Glenkirk, Bello's recognition also brings statewide attention to the work being done by direct support professionals in Northbrook and communities throughout the Chicago suburbs to help people with disabilities live more independent and fulfilling lives.
