About 300 people attended last year's inaugural festival, a partnership between the Northbrook Park District, Wheeling Park District and state Sen. Julie Morrison, in cooperation with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The same partners are organizing this year's event.

Northbrook Park District Recreation Supervisor Mary Freer said the festival gives families an opportunity to spend time together outdoors.

"I especially love the Fishing Derby because it's so special to see the excitement on a child's face when they catch their very first fish!" Freer said.

The children's derby will award trophies in each age category for the smallest fish, biggest fish and most fish caught.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources will provide fishing rods and a Conservation Police education trailer with interactive wildlife displays. Staff from both park districts will help participants get started.

Wheeling Park District Director of Public Relations Daniela Chavez Lira said the partnership encourages families to explore neighboring communities.

"We are creating a larger experience that encourages people to discover something new, get outdoors and connect with the natural beauty of our communities," she said.

Morrison said fishing is one of her favorite pastimes.

"Events like these are a wonderful opportunity for neighbors to come together, spend some quality time and enjoy the nature available to them right here in our community," she said.

Northbrook Cub Scout Pack 182 and other organizations focused on the environment are expected to participate. Both park districts will offer program information, free giveaways and a free prize drawing at their tables.

Coffee and snacks will be available for purchase.

For more information, visit the Fall Fishing Fest event page or call 847-291-2995.

The event will be canceled in case of inclement weather. Families can check the park district's status page, use the free Statusfy app or call 847-281-3370 for updates.
