Announcing Our Popular Critics' Choice Films at the Library

With Oscar season upon us, it’s a great time to catch up on some of the 2023 award contenders. We'll screen a different critically acclaimed film on the big screen in the library's Auditorium each Wednesday in March at 2pm or 7pm. To attend any of the screenings. A library card is not required to register, but advance registration is required. Please register in advance here.

Our Critics' Choice series kicks off with Top Gun: Maverick on March 1. Released 30 years after the original Top Gun, this highly acclaimed sequel stars Tom Cruise, the leader of a team of recent “Top Gun” (top-tier navy pilots) graduates on an action-packed mission.

Journey to Ireland with The Banshees of Inisherin on March 8. This film tells the story of a cow herder in 1920s coastal Ireland on a desperate emotional journey to figure out why his best friend has–without any sign of warning or remorse–cut him out of his life.

On March 15 we’ll screen Everything Everywhere All at Once, the film that received nominations in a whopping 11 categories. Michelle Yeoh stars as the owner of a laundromat now being audited by the IRS. Juggling an upcoming tax auditor visit with a potentially more stress-inducing visit from her estranged father, she is thrown into an adventure that spans multiple universes. If you missed seeing this film on the big screen, this is your chance.

Join us on March 22 for Till, starring Danielle Deadwyler as Mamie Till-Mobley, Emmett Till’s mother. This film tells Emmett Till’s story, contrasting his brutal fate with his lesser talked about before: his life as a teenager stepping into independence. Despite a lack of Oscar nominations, we’ve included this film for its outstanding performances, haunting score, and emotionally gut-wrenching storytelling.

Our final film in the series is Aftersun on March 29, which explores a young girl’s foray into teenagehood and independence. But more than that it explores the connection between parent and child, and an exercise in empathy as it navigates reexamining childhood memories from an adult’s perspective. Come see the film that earned Paul Mescal his first Oscar nomination: for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.
