The Northbrook Chamber of Commerce invites civic-minded individuals to apply for the annual Leadership Northbrook course, an eight-session program that offers a comprehensive look at the inner workings of the Village. The monthly class, open to people residing or working in Northbrook, provides an in-depth view of community institutions, builds strong connections between participants, and inspires further civic involvement.

Leadership Northbrook takes place in eight half-day sessions on the second Friday morning of the month, beginning September 9. Participants visit different locations each month for presentations from influential civic, business and government officials, along with private tours of some of the Village’s signature businesses and community resources. The program deepens their understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing Northbrook and the North Shore region, while establishing networks among emerging leaders. Many graduates go on to serve on Village boards and commissions or provide leadership for non-profit organizations.

Topics covered in the program include Village history, an overview of municipal government, planning and zoning issues, the diverse business community, transportation highlights, educational resources, and life safety services. One of the most popular sessions is the Park District’s Teams Challenge Course at Meadowhill Park, where participants get to know each other through fun group exercises that draw on leadership and teamwork skills. Other site visits include Village Hall, Techny Towers, Glenbrook North High School, and Glenbrook Hospital, as well as prominent businesses like UL, Bernhard Woodwork, Northbrook Court and Highland Baking.

Local organizations frequently sponsor employees in Leadership to help them learn about the community and build connections. For example, the Northbrook Police Department has sent officers to participate almost every year of the program.

“I had the pleasure of participating in Leadership’s 2010 class, and the experience left a lasting impression on me,” recalls Northbrook Police Chief Roger Adkins. “It’s a unique way for our staff to interact with the public in a personal, informal way. It also introduces officers to the wide range of organizations that support the greater community.”
