Back To School: Northbrook 2021-22 School Calendar

Parents in Northbrook can mark the first day of school coming later this summer.

NORTHBROOK, IL — Back-to-school planning has already begun in Northbrook, with calendars available to help parents prepare for the first day in Northbrook District 27, Northbrook District 28, Northbrook/Glenview School District 30 and Glenbrook High Schools District 225.

The first day of school for Glenbrooks High School District 225 is planned for Aug. 18. Northbrook District 27 and 28 start the next day on Aug. 19. Northbrook/Glenview District 30 doesn't begin until Sept. 2.

Heading into the upcoming school year, some dates are subject to change as the coronavirus pandemic nears its year-and-a-half point. A mix of in-person, virtual and hybrid learning is still possible in the Northbrook districts.

On Wednesday, the Illinois Federation of Teachers and Cook County Department of Public Health announced its endorsement of guidelines from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Illinois Department of Public Health calling for universal masking in schools, regardless of vaccination status.

District 27 said it will follow the new guidance and require universal masking for all staff, students, and visitors, regardless of vaccination status until further notice.

District 28 Superintendent Larry Hewitt said in a letter to parents on July 12, "We are also working to determine if it is feasible to allow vaccinated students the option to forgo wearing masks. In order to do so, the district would need to verify student vaccination status at the junior high where there will be a mix of students who are vaccinated and unvaccinated. Since the vaccine is currently only available to children age 12 and older, all of our younger students will be required to wear masks indoors. Beyond that, no final decisions have been made regarding mask requirements for vaccinated individuals."

District 30 said all Northfield Township Schools will offer full in-person learning this fall. There will be no hybrid. An update on its plan regarding any mask mandates is expected Friday. A district spokesperson told Patch they are considering following any guidance from the CDC and will follow the updated CDC guidance on universal masking regardless of vaccination status.

District 225 Superintendent Dr. Charles Johns said in June, "We are expecting clear guidance for schools from the Cook County Department of Public Health, Illinois State Board of Education, and the CDC, which will inform us if masks will be required or not for the next school year."
