Since our nation's founding, the national government has expanded its impact into the everyday lives of each American. Traditionally limited to tariffs, construction of national roads, and the postal service, the federal government now administers myriad controls ranging from national security, building materials, transportation, quality of clothing fibers, and even the very air we breathe. This all costs money, which depends upon our federal budget process. Joseph Steinfels explains the history of the process and the current operations, as well as special circumstances such as sequestration and continuing resolutions.
