College Credits Roundup: Northbrook Residents Earn Honors

Area students are doing amazing things at colleges and universities across the United States.

UNION COLLEGE

Jack Pierre, of Northbrook, recently made the dean's list. He is a member of the class of 2021, majoring in economics. Comprised annually, the Union College Dean's List honors students who have a grade point average of 3.5 for the entire academic year and meet certain other requirements.

ROCHESTER INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Rochester Institute of Technology conferred some 4,000 degrees at all of its campuses in the 2019-2020 academic year. A virtual celebration was held May 8 at rit.edu/classof2020. The following local residents received degrees:

  • Michelle Kim, of Northbrook, received a BFA in graphic design.
  • Nicholas Petreikis, of Northbrook, received a BS in microelectronic engineering.

ILLINOIS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY

Illinois Wesleyan University honored 388 candidates for graduation on Aug. 2 during the University's first-ever virtual Commencement ceremony, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. President S. Georgia Nugent delivered the Commencement address. The candidates include:

  • Alecia Beagles, of Northbrook, majored in Biology.
  • Daniel Cole, of Northbrook, majored in Marketing.
  • Leah Sternberg, of Northbrook, majored in Nursing.

Illinois Wesleyan University's Dean's List for the spring semester of the 2019-20 academic year consisted of 831 students from 29 states and 16 countries. The following local students made the list:

  • Ellen Gilbert, of Northbrook, a sophomore majoring in Psychology.
  • Leah Matlin, of Northbrook, a first-year majoring in Undecided.

To qualify for the Dean's List, students must earn a GPA of 3.50 or better during the semester, based on 4.0 for straight As.

UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-WHITEWATER

David Rubin, a native of Northbrook, member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team, is one of 373 UW-Whitewater student-athletes representing all 22 of the institution's varsity sport programs were named to the 2019-20 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Honor Roll. He is a graduate of Glenbrook North High School. Rubin, who was a freshman in 2019-20, is majoring in general management.

LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY

Lawrence University students were named to the 2020 Dean's List, an annual honor roll of students demonstrating exemplary academic performance. The Dean's List is compiled at the end of the academic year once all grades have been recorded. To make the Dean's List, a student must have earned at least 36 units in Lawrence courses during the academic year and have earned a GPA of at least 3.5.

The following local students have earned 2020 Dean's List honors at Lawrence University:

  • Leo Mayer, of Northbrook, a member of the class of 2020.
  • Max Altman, of Northbrook, a member of the class of 2021.
  • Maddie Guest, of Northbrook, a member of the class of 2023.
  • Cal Schaeffer, of Northbrook, a member of the class of 2023.

Leo Mayer, of Northbrook, has graduated from Lawrence University.

The Lawrence community gathered virtually in mid-June for a Commencement celebration unlike any other in the school's 171-year history. Held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic that moved Spring Term classes to distance learning, the ceremony celebrated the accomplishments of nearly 270 Lawrentians in the Class of 2020. Mayer earned a B.A. degree with a major in computer science, mathematics and music.

UNIVERSITY OF IOWA

Michael Dankanich, of Northbrook, was one of 42 current students and alumni of the University of Iowa to be awarded some of the more than $159,000 and $36,000 in funding to be distributed to winners in the second phase of the Iowa Innovation Challenge. Sponsored by the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (Iowa JPEC) with parters the UI Office of the Vice President for Research, University of Iowa Research Foundation, and UI Ventures and staged in early April, the Iowa Innovation Challenge supports innovation across the UI campus an is open to all UI faculty, staff, students, and incubator startups. Dankanich won $3,500 for finishing 1st in the Best Lifestyle Business for FestPlug. He is an open major.
