Congressman Schneider Joins Ribbon Cutting at NSYMCA Celebrating New Roof Funded by Federal Grant

Northbrook, IL – On Thursday, July 31, the North Suburban YMCA (NSYMCA) hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of a major capital improvement: a newly constructed roof, decades in the making. The celebration welcomed community leaders, NSYMCA Board Members, and special guest Congressman Brad Schneider (IL-10), who played a pivotal role in helping secure the federal funding necessary for the project.

Thanks to Congressman Schneider’s advocacy, the NSYMCA was awarded a $750,000 Community Project Funding Grant through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grant allowed the Y to complete a full reroofing of its 65-year-old facility—ensuring a safer and more sustainable environment for the thousands of individuals throughout 15 communities it serves each year.

“Organizations like the Y are crucial to our communities, especially for youth, seniors, and those with disabilities. The North Suburban YMCA has served thousands and thousands of residents in Illinois’s 10th congressional district over the past decade, and I look forward to seeing our neighbors continue to enjoy and benefit from its resources,” states Congressman Schneider.

“We are deeply grateful to our federal and state leaders for taking the time to understand the climate in which nonprofits operate, their hard work makes a direct difference in the lives of our residents and the future of our community.” says Kathy Fielding, CEO of the NSYMCA. “Organizations like the Y are the heart of our communities. Every year, thousands of individuals walk through our doors—from toddlers in swim lessons to seniors in wellness programs, to families seeking connection and support. With the completion of this critical infrastructure project, we can ensure our facility is safe, accessible, and sustainable for years to come,” continues Fielding.

While this grant marks a major milestone, NSYMCA leaders stress that the need for infrastructure support is ongoing.

Debbie Madeley, the NSYMCA’s Development Director, echoes the importance of community-wide involvement. “Like many nonprofits, we operate in a building that’s more than six decades old. Continued investment—both public and private—is essential to maintain a space where all members of our community can thrive. Our ability to serve depends on the ability to maintain the space where that service happens and the roof is only one part of a much larger puzzle,” continues Madeley. “We’re incredibly grateful for this federal support—though day to day, we rely on the generosity of individuals, families, and local partners who believe in our mission. Every donation helps us build a stronger, healthier, more inclusive community.”
