Customer Returned Fake iPhones for Cash at Apple Store: Cops

Home ransacked during ruse burglary on Koepke Road.

The following information is from the Northbrook Police Department. An arrest is not an indication of guilt.

THEFT

A victim in the 4100 block of Dundee Road at 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 reported that he was in the parking lot when a subject approached him from behind and showed him a wallet asking him if it was the victim’s. The victim reported the subject was very close to him during the conversation. The victim later discovered a set of keys missing from his jacket and believes the subject in the parking lot removed them from his jacket.

THEFT

A complainant at the Apple Store in the 1500 block of Lake Cook Road reported at 4 p.m. on Nov. 13 that a black man came into the store and purchased three iPhone 7s for $2136.84 in cash for the merchandise. The offender returned approximately thirty minutes later to return the iPhones. The store employee completed the return transaction and subject left the store with the cash. A short time later the store employees determined that the offender had switched the iPhones in the boxes and returned three fake phones with the return.

RETAIL THEFT

A store manager at Lowe's in the 1000 block of Willow Road reported that on Nov. 13th at 8 a.m., two black men entered the store and removed four faucets with a value of $1,526 from the shelf. The offenders left the store without paying for the merchandise. The merchandise was later returned for a refund at a Lowe’s store in Chicago by two offenders matching the Northbrook offender’s description.

BURGLARY TO AUTO

A victim in the parking lot of Northbrook Court reported that on Nov. 17 between 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. offenders broke the rear passenger side window of the victim’s white 2016 Audi. The offender removed a purple Lululemon gym bag worth $150 from the rear passenger seat of the vehicle.

THEFT

Jusuf M. Cancar, 45, Wheeling was arrested on a theft charge. A complainant in the 1800 block of Pfingsten Road reported that they noticed a decline in the usual amount of donations placed in their donation boxes over a several month period. After an investigation detectives arrested the defendant, a volunteer at the facility, for stealing several hundred dollars from the donation boxes. Northbrook officers arrested him at his residence, he was processed and later released after posting bond.

BURGLARY to VEHICLE

A victim at the Mariano's in the 700 block of Skokie Highway reported that offenders entered her 2001 Chevrolet between 11 a.m. and 4:20 p.m. on Nov. 19 while she was working. The offender appeared to gain entry by forcing open the driver side door. Stolen from the victim’s vehicle was a purse containing credit cards, identification, sunglasses and approximately $240.

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY

A homeowner in the 2900 block of Koepke Road reported at 4:38 p.m. on Nov. 19 that a Hispanic man who appeared to be about 50 years old with a short, stocky build knocked on his door. The subject spoke to the victim about his roof and then the offender took him to the rear yard to talk about the fence. When the homeowner looked he observed a second subject inside the house speaking to his son. The son reported that two Hispanic men knocked at the front door after his father went to the rear yard. One of the offenders asked to enter to get hot water while the second subject disappeared from his view. The offender that was with the son answered his phone and left the house just before the father came back inside. The offenders were observed leaving the area in a black vehicle. When the homeowner checked his house he found a room that had been ransacked with multiple desk drawers pulled open. Nothing appeared to have been stolen.

THEFT

A complainant at Pinstripes in the 1100 block of WIllow Road reported at 10:47 p.m. on Nov. 19 they were attending a party for a family member at the location. During the evening they discovered a gift bag containing numerous cards and envelopes which contained cash and checks missing from under a table where it had been placed. A party guest later found an opened card and envelope in a garbage can which was located in the men’s bathroom. According to the complainant the bag contained a couple thousand dollars in checks and cash.

RETAIL THEFT

Tyree D. Jeffries, 21, Waukegan was charged with retail theft at 5:35 p.m. on Nov. 20 at the Saks Off 5th in the 100 block of Skokie Highway. The offender was observed by store security placing numerous items of merchandise into a shopping bag. Officers arrived on scene as the defendant was exiting the store without paying for the merchandise. The defendant dropped the bag with the merchandise and fled on foot through the parking lot. Officers caught the defendant and placed him under arrest.

BURGLARY TO VEHICLE

A victim at J. Alexanders in the 4000 block of Lake Cook Road reported that between 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Nov. 22 offenders broke the driver’s side rear window on his 2016 Chevy which was parked in the restaurant parking lot. The offenders stole a backpack containing a laptop and assorted company papers. The victim did not know the brand of laptop or the cost to replace the stolen items.

RETAIL THEFT

The loss prevention agent at the Mariano's store in the 700 block of Skokie Highway reported that at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 22 an offender came into the business and placed liquor bottles from the shelves into a shopping cart and exited the store without paying for the merchandise. The offender is described as a white man with medium height, approximately 210 lbs., balding wearing a black jacket and jeans. He entered a light colored BMW and fled the parking lot with approximately $310 in merchandise. Store security contacted police approximately three hours after the theft.

BATTERY

Mikhail A. Sardaryan, 53, Glenview was charged with battery at 7:37 p.m. on Nov. 24 in the 3100 block of Dundee Road. The victim reported that both he and the defendant are employed at the same business. While working, the defendant and the victim had a verbal dispute which became physical causing the victim to be injured. The defendant was placed under arrest, processed and later released after posting bond.

RETAIL THEFT

Karen Badawi, 43, Niles was charged with retail theft at 3:27 p.m. on Nov. 26 at the TJ Maxx store in the 1-100 block of Skokie Boulevard. The defendant was observed by store loss prevention placing merchandise into a shopping cart. She then left the store with the cart of merchandise failing to pay for the items. The defendant was stopped by store security. Officers placed the defendant under arrest. She was processed and later released on bond.
