Deadline Approaching To Apply For Seat On District 31 School Board

Former member Meredith Estes, who was elected to a four-year seat in 2021, resigned last month.

NORTHBROOK, IL — While three seats on the West Northfield School District 31 Board of Education will be up for grabs in next month's consolidated municipal elections, an interim replacement is also needed. The vacancy comes as former member Meredith Estes resigned her seat on Feb. 27.

Estes was elected to the West Northfield Board of Education in April 2021.

The Board will select an interim replacement to serve from the time of appointment until the seating of new Board members following the April 2025 school board election. Interested individuals must submit an application by 4 p.m. Friday.

The application must include:

  • Full name and contact information (home address, phone, and email address)
  • A resume
  • A letter of interest explaining the following:
  • The reason you want to serve as an interim member of the District 31 Board of Education.
  • The skills you would bring to the Board.
  • Previous relevant community or non-profit experiences.

Interested individuals are encouraged to apply following the procedures listed below. The Board of Education will schedule interviews, if necessary, with qualified applicants at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14, in the District 31 Board Room.

Five candidates, including an official write-in candidate, are vying for three seats on the West Northfield School District 31 Board of Education on Election Day. Current board members Daphne Frank and Melissa Choo Valentinas are not running for reelection when their terms ends next month. The candidates that will be on the ballot are:

  • Maria Vasilopoulos, current member (terms ends in 2023)
  • Noah Frank
  • Elizabeth Kim (write-in candidate)
  • Meghan McMillin
  • Nick Parfitt

According to district officials, the interim appointment will be made in conformance with state law as found in Board Policy 2:025. A candidate must meet the legal qualifications set forth in Board Policy 2:009 and should show familiarity with the Board’s policies regarding general duties and responsibilities of the Board and a Board member. Information about Board duties and policies is available on the District 31 Board Docs website. The Board will make its appointment within the 60-day timeframe required by law.
