Northbrook-based physician Dr. Michael Unger, M.D. will present a seminar entitled "The Lowdown on High Blood Pressure: Symptoms and Treatments for Hypertension" at the Northbrook Public Library, 1201 Cedar Lane on Thursday April 28 at 7:00 pm. The seminar is free and open to the public. Advance registration is not required. Questions and answers follow the seminar. Call the library at (847) 272-6224 for directions or more information.
The one hour seminar will cover the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, complications and effects of high blood pressure (hypertension) and the benefits of improved diet and regular exercise. The latest treatments and medications will be discussed in detail. According to the World Health Organization, hypertension affects 20% of the world's adult population. Dr. Unger adds that 50 million Americans, or one in four people, have high blood pressure. The disease affects men, women and children of every age and every ethnicity. Because there are no obvious symptoms most people don't realize they may be at serious risk. In fact, many people have high blood pressure for years without ever knowing it. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure and kidney failure. Thus it is often referred to as the "silent killer". The only method to accurately determine high blood pressure is to have it checked regularly by a medical professional.
