Mystery Writing I

Mystery writing can be, well, a mystery. Where do you start—With the crime? With the villain?—and how do you seed the clues that will allow your reader to solve the puzzle along with your sleuth?

This four-week course will introduce you to some of the conventions mystery readers expect from your work, and how to create a story that will keep your readers turning the pages.

Each week will offer:

  • Writing prompts to help you get started no matter where you are in the mystery-writing process
  • Tips for leaving clues, developing suspense, and creating the kinds of characters your readers will follow into danger
  • Readings from classic and contemporary mysteries that will help you find your place in the genre
  • Opportunities to share work with your peers and get immediate feedback
